What is an advanced meter?

Advanced meters give customers more timely information on their energy use. Customers can access a customized online dashboard that can help them track and compare their energy usage by day, week, month or year.

While most meters record a running total of the energy used, an advanced meter can record energy usage data in 15-, 30- or 60-minute increments. Generally, the meter will communicate this usage information to LG&E and KU’s data network system several times a day.

Accessing the MyMeter dashboard

First, sign in to your online account to access your MyMeter dashboard.

You’ll find the “View MyMeter” link under the “Account History” and “Programs and Tools” sections.

Or go to for direct access to your MyMeter dashboard.


What are "alerts?"

You can schedule MyMeter notifications under “Communication Preferences” to receive customized updates about your energy usage by text or email.


By setting threshold limits, you can request and receive a MyMeter notification when you’ve reached your desired limit.

While you can set your threshold limits and request how you prefer to receive these updates, all notifications are sent at 11 a.m., Eastern Time.

If you need to schedule your customized billing notifications associated with your LG&E or KU account, please log in to your online account to make these updates.


How to use Energy Markers™

Whether viewing your energy usage in the “Chart” or “Data” View, be sure to use the Energy Markers™ feature to create a customized date reminder when you make any changes that could impact how you use energy. 

Track activites that can impact your energy usage, such as changing out light bulbs, replacing your HVAC system or even accidentally leaving a door or window open for an extended period of time. 

Click on the "marker" icon toward the top right corner of the table in either "chart" or "data" view. A drop-down window will appear where you can customize the information about your new date reminder. Once you've completed the information, click "Add Marker." 



Once you've added a new marker, you will see it appear within your energy usage data charts. 



You may choose "View All" at any time to review your full list of Energy Marker date reminders. From this screen, you may select and delete  from the list any date reminders you previously set. 


You also may choose “View All” within the marker menu for quick comparisons of your energy usage before, during and after each Energy Marker date reminder.


What is the Rate Comparison Tool?

The Rate Comparison Tool displays the rate option that offers you the greatest savings based on your historic consumption and rates currently offered by the company.

  • Standard Electric Rate:  Customers on the standard electric rate are charged the same amount for electricity no matter when they use it.
  • Time-of-Day Rates:  We also offer time-of-day rates that vary based on how and when you use energy. These periods of time are called on-peak and off-peak hours. On-peak hours have a higher charge per kilowatt-hour than off-peak hours.

Before making a switch to a different rate, you should research all available options and use this tool to compare your energy usage within many date ranges to find the rate that best fits your energy habits and usage patterns. Because weather plays a big part in the amount of energy you use, you may want to do your rate comparisons when you have at least an entire year’s worth of usage. This will allow you to compare rates at various times of the year. You’ll be able to see how estimated costs for your usage during the summer and winter months as well as during the milder temperatures in spring and fall. And if you have multiple years of data, you’ll be able to compare a milder summer or winter one year to a more extreme summer or winter another year.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Because these estimates are based on your historical usage, we strongly suggest you take into account any changes that have occurred or you anticipate will occur in your energy usage patterns before changing rates.

Compare rates for all 12 months of usage

To compare rates for all 12 months of usage in 2018, move the slider on the left to the tick mark for January 2018. Then move the slider on the right to the tick mark for January 2019. Click Compare Rates. (See image below.)


Compare rates for the summer months (June, July, August)

To compare rates for the summer months (June, July, August), move the slider on the left to June. Then move the slider on the right to the tick mark for September. Click Compare Rates to get an estimate of the costs for energy for that timeframe. (See image below.)



What is the Charts view?

In "Charts View," you’ll now be able to track and compare your energy usage in several views – by day, week, month or year.

  • Check out how your energy use compares to your local weather conditions.
  • Use the “Zoom” feature, take a closer look at a specific date range or single day.
  • Over time as the information from your meter accumulates in your MyMeter dashboard, you’ll have the ability to compare changes in your energy usage from the previous week, month or 90-day average.

For your convenience, your energy usage comparisons can be found in the top leader bar above your energy usage and next to your account information.


What is the Data view?

By clicking on "Data View," you can compare how your energy usage fluctuates over a period of time using this calendar-style format.

Data View's unique heat map feature will compare your energy usage over time. Blue-shaded squares indicate when your energy usage is lower than average, and red-shaded squares indicate when your energy usage is higher than average.

What is the Property Profile?

By providing basic information about your property – such as size, age of construction and types of appliances – you can create a more customized experience and gain more insight into how you use energy.

You may update this information at any time if you make changes or improvements that could impact your energy use. Your profile information is specific to your MyMeter dashboard only. If you need to update your profile information associated with your LG&E and KU account, please log in to your online account to make these updates.


What is the Energy Challenge?

Take the Energy Challenge. Gain control of your energy use by setting an energy-savings goal.

Set your six-month energy savings goal then track your progress to the same time period the previous year.

Once you start the challenge, you’ll be able to see your progress at a glance each month when you are on your MyMeter dashboard. Take a deeper dive into your progress by clicking “Details” to expand the view.

Compared to last year


IMPORTANT:  The Energy Challenge is available to customers with 12 months or more of usage history on their advanced meter. Hang in there. You’ll be able to take the Energy Challenge as soon as you have built 12 months of energy usage with your advanced meter.

If you’ve had your advanced meter for a year or more, you’ll be able to add the Energy Challenge widget to your MyMeter dashboard. The Energy Challenge will appear as an option when you click the gear in one of the widget boxes at the top of your dashboard.

Over time as your energy usage information accumulates in your MyMeter dashboard, you’ll have the ability to compare changes in your energy usage from the previous week, month or 90-day average. 

For your convenience, these comparisons can be found in the top leader bar above your energy usage and next to your account information. 


MyMeter dashboard time zones

When you view your energy usage in your MyMeter dashboard, your usage data will appear in the local time zone where your property is located. Kentucky is divided between the Eastern and Central Time Zones.

If you have multiple properties with advanced meters, please keep this in mind when viewing your dashboard. 

How does an advanced meter transmit energy usage information?

Advanced meters use a relatively weak radio signal, or low-energy radio frequency waves, common in everyday products — like cell phones, cordless phones and walkie-talkies — to transmit information across distances.

These relatively weak radio frequency waves are a form of electromagnetic energy that move through space at the speed of light. 

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sets RF limits and requires that all radio communicating devices be tested to ensure that they meet federal standards before they are allowed to transmit within the radio spectrum. Advanced meters emit less radio frequency energy than many other commonly-used wireless devices which, like these advanced meters, are FCC-approved.

Will anyone be able to see my electricity usage information?

No. All customer information is confidential and only available to the customer and others they designate as secondary users. In addition, authorized utility personnel as needed for information such as maintenance, billing and customer service. We place the utmost importance on protecting our customers’ safety and security, and we have stringent practices in place to protect the energy usage information of our customers. Please see our privacy policy for more details.

Can having an advanced meter affect my health?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has concluded that no adverse health effects have been demonstrated from exposure to low-level radio frequency energy such as that produced by advanced meters.

Radio frequency signals also weaken significantly as the distance between you and the device increases. The casing of an advanced meter and wall construction materials also decrease the level of RF energy in the vicinity.

Please note that advanced meters transmit RF energy only for short periods each day. In fact, an Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) analysis of 47,000 advanced meters installed in southern California found that 99.5% of the meters were transmitting for approximately three minutes or less daily.

How much does an advanced meter cost?

There is no additional cost for the advanced meter or for the installation.

Do I need to be home when the technician exchanges my meter?

No. You do not need to be present when the technician exchanges the meter unless your meter is located inside your home. If your meter is outside, please make sure the gate is unlocked and any outside pets are inside the home when our technician comes to exchange your meter.

Will my service be interrupted when the technician exchanges my meter?

No. You should not experience an interruption in service when the technician swaps out your meter. If your meter cannot be exchanged without turning off your service, we will let you know and we will schedule a time to exchange the meter so that you won’t be inconvenienced with an unplanned interruption of service.
